Chesil Literacy Project

Celebrating Creativity through Oracy and Music

Over 600 Year 5 children from 11 primary schools came together last week to take part in a powerful celebration of creativity, bringing oracy and music together through the Chesil Literacy Project.

Involving 20 classes and 40 teachers, the project culminated in the creation and performance of 20 original poems, each paired with a unique musical composition. Organised by Education Challenge Leads in partnership with Dorset Music Service, the event offered children a truly special opportunity to step onto the largest stage in their local community – not only as performers, but also as a shared audience for one another’s work. Parents and carers were invited to attend free of charge, helping to strengthen the link between schools, families and the wider community.

Now in its third year, the Chesil Literacy Project is an initiative working with all schools across Weymouth and Portland to raise outcomes in literacy. Alongside the pupil performances, teachers engaged in focused professional development to support their practice in oracy and music. This year’s CPD centered on dynamics and rhythm, enabling staff to embed these concepts meaningfully within classroom practice.

Each participating Year 5 class produced a poem with a musical element, with children confidently introducing their work and reflecting on their learning before performing. The project not only showcased creativity and collaboration, but also helped to build confidence, communication skills and a strong sense of achievement for pupils and staff alike.

This inspiring event is a powerful example of what can be achieved when schools work together in partnership to enrich learning experiences and raise aspirations for all children.
