DESCRIPTION:Music can take you in more directions than you might imagine. \n\n\n\n\n\nFor National Careers Week 2027\, Octagon Music Hub is shining a spotlight on the huge range of careers and pathways available across music and the creative industries. Being a musician is just one possibility. The music industry needs producers\, sound engineers\, composers\, teachers\, promoters\, technicians\, artist managers\, venue teams\, marketers\, digital creators and many more. \n\n\n\nExplore careers in music\n\n\n\nNational Careers Week is a great opportunity for schools and young people to discover what working in music can actually look like. You could: \n\n\n\n\ndiscover some of the different jobs that exist across music and the creative industries;\n\n\n\nexplore the skills and qualifications needed for different careers;\n\n\n\nhear from people already working in the industry;\n\n\n\ninvestigate apprenticeships\, further and higher education and other routes into music;\n\n\n\nfind out how skills developed through music can transfer to other careers; and\n\n\n\nexplore opportunities to gain practical experience.\n\n\n\n\nMusic starts somewhere. Where could it take you?\n\n\n\nA young person might begin by learning an instrument\, singing in a choir\, creating tracks on a laptop\, helping with the sound at a school concert or organising a gig with friends. Any of these experiences could be the beginning of something more. Throughout National Careers Week\, we’ll be sharing information\, resources and opportunities to help young people across Dorset and Somerset discover the many different routes into music and the creative industries. \n\n\n\nSave the date – 1–6 March 2027. DESCRIPTION:Celebrating neurodiversity through music\n\n\n\n\n\nMarch 2027 – dates to be confirmed \n\n\n\nMusic is experienced\, understood\, created and expressed in many different ways. During Neurodiversity Celebration Week\, Octagon Music Hub will be celebrating different ways of thinking\, learning\, communicating and making music\, while sharing resources to help make music education more inclusive and accessible. \n\n\n\nCelebrating neurodiversity through music\n\n\n\nNeurodiversity Celebration Week is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate neurological differences\, including autism\, ADHD\, dyslexia\, dyspraxia and others. For schools and music educators\, it’s also an opportunity to think about how we create musical environments in which different learners can participate\, develop and thrive. \n\n\n\nThroughout the week\, we’ll be encouraging our music education community to explore: \n\n\n\n\ninclusive approaches to teaching and music-making;\n\n\n\ndifferent ways for young people to participate\, create and communicate through music;\n\n\n\nadapting rehearsals\, lessons and musical environments to reduce barriers;\n\n\n\nrecognising individual strengths and different approaches to learning;\n\n\n\nresources and ideas for teachers and music practitioners; and\n\n\n\nthe experiences and achievements of neurodivergent musicians and music creators.\n\n\n\n\nMusic for everyone\n\n\n\nEvery child and young person should have the opportunity to experience the joy and benefits of making music. We’ll be sharing ideas and resources for schools\, educators and music practitioners as we approach Neurodiversity Celebration Week 2027. \n\n\n\nSave the date – March 2027. SUMMARY:Purbeck Youth Music Dido & Aeneas Project
DESCRIPTION:On March 4th next year\, PYM will be mounting a concert at the Lighthouse\, Poole with the renowned music ensemble Gabrieli consort and players.  The ensemble with a full set of soloists will perform Purcell’s opera Dido & Aeneas. \n\n\n\n\n\nThey will be joined by young singers from The Purbeck School\, The Thomas Hardy School in Dorchester\, the St Mary’s Swanage Choristers and the Bournemouth Symphony Youth Chorus to perform the choruses.  In between each scene\, primary school singers from 10 primary schools across Purbeck will sing folk songs and sea shanties related to the story. The schools taking part are St Mary’s RC Swanage\, Swanage Primary\, St Mark’s CE Swanage\, St George’s CE Langton Matravers\, Corfe Castle CE\, Stoborough\, St Mary’s CE Wareham\, SMSJ Wool RC and Lulworth/Winfrith. This will be an amazing opportunity for young people from across Purbeck to sing together on stage at the Lighthouse with professional musicians. \n\n\n\nThe concert starts at 6.00pm and will finish around 7.40pm . \n\n\n\nParents/carers are invited to attend the concert and may want to travel to the Lighthouse on the coaches which will be specially provided by PYM in partnership with the coach subsidiary of More Bus. Booking in advance is essential. Discounted concert seats or coach travel will not be available after 1st December. \n\n\n\nConcert Tickets \n\n\n\nParents/carers can book a maximum of 3 tickets to watch the event at the Lighthouse\, at the discounted rate of £2 per ticket. Tickets are not required for the participants. \n\n\n\nCoach Tickets \n\n\n\nPurbeck Youth Music will make all the arrangements to take children to the rehearsals at the Lighthouse before the concert and return them to their schools afterwards. There will be no charge to families for the performer’s transport costs. \n\n\n\nParents/carers booking concert tickets can request to have a return ticket for travel by coach to and from the concert for £2 per person. Coaches for parents/carers will leave the schools at around 5pm to arrive in good time. The precise timings from each school will be available in February. \n\n\n\nImportant: If you are making your own way to the Lighthouse and do NOT want your child/children to return to school on the bus after the performance you will need to register that intention when booking. \n\n\n\nFor more information and to book visit: Purbeck Youth Music Dido & Aeneas Project

DESCRIPTION:Every year on 21 June\, people around the world come together to celebrate music through Make Music Day. \n\n\n\nIt’s a chance for everyone to get involved – whether you’re an experienced musician\, picking up an instrument for the first time\, singing with friends or simply listening to the music you love. \n\n\n\nWhat is Make Music Day?\n\n\n\nMake Music Day began in France in 1982 as Fête de la Musique\, with a simple idea: encourage people to make music and bring live music into public spaces for everyone to enjoy. Since then\, it has grown into an international celebration involving musicians and communities around the world. At its heart is the idea that music is for everyone. \n\n\n\nHow can you get involved?\n\n\n\nYou don’t need to organise a huge concert to take part. Schools\, music groups\, families and individuals can celebrate in all sorts of ways. \n\n\n\nYou could: \n\n\n\n\nperform a piece of music at school or in your community;\n\n\n\nbring pupils together for a whole-school sing;\n\n\n\ntry an instrument you’ve never played before;\n\n\n\nwrite or create your own music;\n\n\n\nput on an informal lunchtime performance;\n\n\n\nshare music with friends or family;\n\n\n\ndiscover an artist or style of music that’s new to you; or\n\n\n\nsimply make time to play\, sing or listen.\n\n\n\n\nMaking music across Dorset and Somerset\n\n\n\nAcross Dorset and Somerset\, thousands of children and young people make music every week – in classrooms\, lessons\, ensembles\, community groups and at home. Make Music Day is a great opportunity to celebrate that activity\, but also to invite someone new to join in. \n\n\n\nAt Octagon Music Hub\, we want every child and young person to have opportunities to experience music\, make music and find ways to continue their musical journey\, whatever their starting point. DESCRIPTION:This International Women’s Day\, Octagon Music Hub is celebrating women in music and music education – from the teachers\, tutors\, community musicians and music leaders inspiring children and young people every day\, to the composers\, performers\, conductors\, songwriters\, producers and industry professionals shaping music around the world. \n\n\n\nAcross Dorset and Somerset\, women play an extraordinary role in helping children and young people discover music\, develop their talents and imagine where music might take them. \n\n\n\nInternational Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate their contribution – and to help the next generation discover the many different women\, careers and creative pathways that make up the world of music. \n\n\n\nCelebrate women in music\n\n\n\nSchools\, music organisations and educators could use the day to: \n\n\n\n\ncelebrate a female music teacher\, tutor or practitioner who has inspired young people;\n\n\n\ndiscover women composers and musicians from different periods\, cultures and musical traditions;\n\n\n\nexplore the work of female songwriters\, producers\, engineers and other music-industry professionals;\n\n\n\nintroduce young people to the breadth of careers available in music;\n\n\n\ninvite a local female musician or music professional to share her experience; or\n\n\n\nask pupils to nominate a woman in music who inspires them and tell others why.\n\n\n\n\nHelp us celebrate\n\n\n\nWe’d love to hear about the women making a difference through music education across Dorset and Somerset. \n\n\n\nWhether it’s a classroom teacher\, instrumental tutor\, ensemble leader\, community musician or someone working behind the scenes\, International Women’s Day is a chance to recognise the people who inspire others through music. \n\n\n\nSave the date – Monday 8 March 2027.
