SUMMARY:Young musicians: apply for NYO Inspire 2027
DESCRIPTION:Are you aged 13–18 and ready to take your music-making further? \n\n\n\n\n\nApplications close 30 September 2026 \n\n\n\nApplications are now open for NYO Inspire 2027\, the National Youth Orchestra’s free programme for teenage musicians who want to develop their playing\, meet other young musicians and experience high-quality ensemble music-making. There is no audition and the programme is completely free \n\n\n\nWho can apply?\n\n\n\nNYO Inspire is for musicians aged 13–18 who play at approximately Grade 6–8+ level. You don’t need to have taken formal graded exams – what matters is your playing level and enthusiasm to develop as a musician. The programme particularly aims to support young musicians who may face barriers to accessing opportunities to progress in music. It is primarily for young people attending state schools\, with applications also welcomed from home-educated musicians and young musicians who face systemic challenges in accessing musical opportunities. \n\n\n\nWhat could you take part in?\n\n\n\nNYO Inspire offers opportunities throughout the year\, with activities matched to individual musicians and where they are in their musical journey. \n\n\n\nThese can include: \n\n\n\n\nNYO Unite – a day of music-making bringing together musicians from across the NYO community;\n\n\n\nNYO Inspire Ensembles – three-day residencies for strings\, woodwind\, brass and percussion\, alongside creative ensembles;\n\n\n\nNYO Inspire Schools Tour – residential orchestral activity\, workshops and performances; and\n\n\n\nNYO Inspire Orchestra Experience – the opportunity to experience playing together as a full orchestra.\n\n\n\n\nSuccessful applicants will also receive invitations to free one-off music-making events taking place in their local area. \n\n\n\nWhat instruments are included?\n\n\n\nApplications are welcomed from young people playing orchestral instruments including strings\, woodwind\, brass\, percussion\, harp\, orchestral keyboard and saxophone. \n\n\n\nNYO is also developing creative opportunities for musicians who play non-orchestral instruments\, so young people are encouraged to apply whatever instrument they play. \n\n\n\nHow much does it cost?\n\n\n\nNothing. NYO Inspire is completely free. Young musicians usually arrange their own transport\, but travel bursaries are available for those who need financial support. \n\n\n\nHow to apply\n\n\n\nThere is no audition. SUMMARY:BSO KS4 Somerset & Dorset Schools Concert 2026
DESCRIPTION:Designed especially for a KS4 audience\, this presented concert will feature a small ensemble of musicians from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO). This specially designed programme\, will feature pieces from the GCSE music syllabus\, as well as a newly composed piece using ideas submitted in advance by students. The primary aim of this concert is to support young people in their music studies with a mixture of repertoire and composition. \n\n\n\nIn this special event for GCSE and BTEC music students and teachers in Somerset & Dorset\, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO) perform pieces from the current GCSE syllabus\, as well as live composition. \n\n\n\nPresented by BSO Associate Musician Patrick Bailey\, BSO’s KS4 concerts trace the development of music from the baroque period to the present day supporting the music education of all KS4 music students. \n\n\n\nIt includes pieces from current GCSE syllabuses (EDEXCEL\, EDUQAS\, AQA & OCR) and a live composition section\, with schools contributing through their ‘Composition Storyboard’ worksheet which may be featured in the concert. Patrick will pull apart the compositional techniques and utilise them in a short creative composition. \n\n\n\nThe development of instruments and tastes is used as a narrative hook and this allows students to understand why styles vary from genre to genre\, from harpsichord in Bach to musical theatre. \n\n\n\nBSO KS4 Somerset & Dorset Schools Concert 2026

DESCRIPTION:Music can take you in more directions than you might imagine. \n\n\n\n\n\nFor National Careers Week 2027\, Octagon Music Hub is shining a spotlight on the huge range of careers and pathways available across music and the creative industries. Being a musician is just one possibility. The music industry needs producers\, sound engineers\, composers\, teachers\, promoters\, technicians\, artist managers\, venue teams\, marketers\, digital creators and many more. \n\n\n\nExplore careers in music\n\n\n\nNational Careers Week is a great opportunity for schools and young people to discover what working in music can actually look like. You could: \n\n\n\n\ndiscover some of the different jobs that exist across music and the creative industries;\n\n\n\nexplore the skills and qualifications needed for different careers;\n\n\n\nhear from people already working in the industry;\n\n\n\ninvestigate apprenticeships\, further and higher education and other routes into music;\n\n\n\nfind out how skills developed through music can transfer to other careers; and\n\n\n\nexplore opportunities to gain practical experience.\n\n\n\n\nMusic starts somewhere. Where could it take you?\n\n\n\nA young person might begin by learning an instrument\, singing in a choir\, creating tracks on a laptop\, helping with the sound at a school concert or organising a gig with friends. Any of these experiences could be the beginning of something more. During Neurodiversity Celebration Week\, Octagon Music Hub will be celebrating different ways of thinking\, learning\, communicating and making music\, while sharing resources to help make music education more inclusive and accessible. \n\n\n\nCelebrating neurodiversity through music\n\n\n\nNeurodiversity Celebration Week is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate neurological differences\, including autism\, ADHD\, dyslexia\, dyspraxia and others. For schools and music educators\, it’s also an opportunity to think about how we create musical environments in which different learners can participate\, develop and thrive. \n\n\n\nThroughout the week\, we’ll be encouraging our music education community to explore: \n\n\n\n\ninclusive approaches to teaching and music-making;\n\n\n\ndifferent ways for young people to participate\, create and communicate through music;\n\n\n\nadapting rehearsals\, lessons and musical environments to reduce barriers;\n\n\n\nrecognising individual strengths and different approaches to learning;\n\n\n\nresources and ideas for teachers and music practitioners; and\n\n\n\nthe experiences and achievements of neurodivergent musicians and music creators.\n\n\n\n\nMusic for everyone\n\n\n\nEvery child and young person should have the opportunity to experience the joy and benefits of making music. SUMMARY:Purbeck Youth Music Dido & Aeneas Project
DESCRIPTION:On March 4th next year\, PYM will be mounting a concert at the Lighthouse\, Poole with the renowned music ensemble Gabrieli consort and players.  The ensemble with a full set of soloists will perform Purcell’s opera Dido & Aeneas. \n\n\n\n\n\nThey will be joined by young singers from The Purbeck School\, The Thomas Hardy School in Dorchester\, the St Mary’s Swanage Choristers and the Bournemouth Symphony Youth Chorus to perform the choruses.  In between each scene\, primary school singers from 10 primary schools across Purbeck will sing folk songs and sea shanties related to the story. The schools taking part are St Mary’s RC Swanage\, Swanage Primary\, St Mark’s CE Swanage\, St George’s CE Langton Matravers\, Corfe Castle CE\, Stoborough\, St Mary’s CE Wareham\, SMSJ Wool RC and Lulworth/Winfrith. This will be an amazing opportunity for young people from across Purbeck to sing together on stage at the Lighthouse with professional musicians. \n\n\n\nThe concert starts at 6.00pm and will finish around 7.40pm . \n\n\n\nParents/carers are invited to attend the concert and may want to travel to the Lighthouse on the coaches which will be specially provided by PYM in partnership with the coach subsidiary of More Bus. Booking in advance is essential. Discounted concert seats or coach travel will not be available after 1st December. \n\n\n\nConcert Tickets \n\n\n\nParents/carers can book a maximum of 3 tickets to watch the event at the Lighthouse\, at the discounted rate of £2 per ticket. Tickets are not required for the participants. \n\n\n\nCoach Tickets \n\n\n\nPurbeck Youth Music will make all the arrangements to take children to the rehearsals at the Lighthouse before the concert and return them to their schools afterwards. There will be no charge to families for the performer’s transport costs. \n\n\n\nParents/carers booking concert tickets can request to have a return ticket for travel by coach to and from the concert for £2 per person. Coaches for parents/carers will leave the schools at around 5pm to arrive in good time.
